Chapter 16 His Trick [Xavier’s POV] I could never seem to shift my attention from that tiny woman. She looked like she was examining every little thing in the room. My mind drifted back to how terrified I felt as I watched her standing frozen in the middle of the street as that fucking truck came barreling down the road. I had already texted Scott to find that maniac and to make sure that he would get fired before the day was over. Miss Young could have lost her life in a matter of seconds. And for what? A stupid animal! So reckless! I yanked her to safety before I even fully registered what was happening. All I could think about in that moment was to save her—to protect her. I had only known the woman for a day! Why was I behaving like this? Still studying her, two female doctors and a red headed nurse entered the room. Their eyes instantly sought me out and they profusely blushed while gawking at me. One of them took a step toward me as if she was about to ask for a picture or some such nonsense. Sighing, I shook my head, stood up from my chair and looked at them with indifference. “Check her out as quickly as possible. We’re in a hurry.” The group of women flinched at my cold voice and abruptly turned their attention to the actual patient. One of the doctors proceeded to ask Miss Young some questions as the nurse took her vitals. She answered the questions in a calm manner and I was half surprised at how docile she was right now. After making sure that she didn't get hurt anywhere else, one of the doctors approached me with burning interest in her eyes. “Mr. President, she is just fine except for a little bruising. The nurse will apply some ointment to the scratches. In the mean time, could I escort you to the lounge for some coffee?” I translated that to mean that she didn’t think Miss Young wasn’t important enough to have a doctor’s attention. If it were me on that bed, this shitty doctor would be nursing me like fucking Florence Nightingale. Glaring down at her, I demanded, “You apply the medicine yourself. I don't want any bruises showing up on her knee. Oh, and also make sure that she has pain medication for later. After all, the knee is a very sensitive part of the body. In fact, you should personally check her out all over again. I never trust a nurse to do a doctor’s job.” Everyone looked at me as if I had said something absurd. Even Miss Young stared at me like I had grown another head. “Wait! Did I exaggerate too much? I didn’t mean anything by it! I just wanted to show her that I care about her well being. Shit!” I thought. Keeping a vacant expression on my face, I waited for the doctor to follow my orders. She nodded her head and then went over to instruct the nurse to go get some supplies. The nurse stopped what she was doing and left. I went to stand next to the bed and the doctor started reexamining Miss Young’s bruises and cuts. Even I had to admit that they weren’t major injuries. Yet, I couldn’t help but worry. I hated seeing her fair and smooth skin all bruised and blood stained. From the first moment I laid eyes on her, those hazel eyes had me captivated. A mysterious aura lingered behind those eyes. It intrigued me. Actually, I had never met any woman like her. “Excuse me! You’re planning to give me what?!” she yelled. Her sudden shrieking interrupted my thoughts and I saw her horrified expression as she pointed to the syringe that was in the doctor’s hand. “This will help dull the pain that you will experience during the night, miss.” “No. Absolutely not! Besides, there's no need. I will be just fine with the ointment.” I watched as she curled up like a frightened child and continued to protest. I couldn’t believe she was behaving like this over a simple shot. Inhaling a deep breath, I crouched down next to her so that we were eye level with each other. “Miss Young, it's just a shot. You don't need to be so frightened.” “No, Mr. President, please. I really don't want it. I-I don't like needles,” she pleaded. She looked up me with a pitiful expression and I was momentarily bewitched by her puppy-like eyes. An idea suddenly popped into my head. Clearing my throat, I sat down on the bed next to her. “Miss Young, I have an old case that I would like you to hear. Could you calm down and listen? I would like your opinion.” She looked confused by my request. I just needed to distract her long enough for the doctor to carry on with her work. When Miss Young nodded her head, I started telling her about our last business deal that had gotten a little out of hand. I wasn’t sure if this was going to work because I thought women were repulsed by gang related deals. But, to the contrary, I saw her eyes lit with excitement as I explained about how we destroyed the most influential gang in the state. I even went into details about the traps I had laid out for each gang member. Her eyes sparked with enthusiasm. It looked like she was picturing it all happen right in front of her. Being involved in politics, I had learned very quickly how to draw people in with my words and Miss Young was not an exception. As she was completely immersed in my story, she didn’t even notice as I signaled at the doctor to come forward. Thank goodness she wasn’t a complete idiot. Immediately, she got the hint and quickly gave Miss Young the shot. Seeing the doctor finish, I quickly changed back to my normal attitude and stood up. “Let's go Miss Young. We’re heading back to the office.” Her eyes grew wide as she caught sight of the empty syringe and the sly grin on the doctor’s face. “Wait? What did she do? W-when did she inject me?” she yelled.
