Chapter 6 Iswear if I have to explain the reasoning behind the 'no fraternization' rule one more time I'm going to burn this place to the ground and start over. I've worked too hard to make "Omegas First Law Firm" a reality to let that happen. 'Kane, I don't care if she's single now. She's in a vulnerable position, and you're in a seat of power. You absolutely cannot ask if she wants to meet your pack. If she brings it up, that's one thing, and it has to wait until after her case is closed.' The fresh-out-of-law-school alpha across from me nearly pouts, crossing his arms. Really, I should mention the risk of her rejecting him and then him losing the case. Even if the two events are completely unrelated, it might still raise questions. Questions we don't need, not with the resistance my organization is meeting from lawyers everywhere. That would make him back off. Nobody understands risk assessment better than a lawyer. But he needs to start thinking about how his actions will affect the people around him, not just to cover his own ass. 'I can't fucking focus when she's around, Bossman.' He groans, his head falling back. 'She smells so good.' I'm surprised this is coming from him. This is his third case since coming to work for me and he hasn't had any problems with the other two omegas he represented. 'Kane.' My tone is sharp. 'You will conduct yourself in a manner that's befitting of this organization or you will no longer be a part of it. Do you understand?' He straightens, his pout gone. His fuck-boy mask slips off, and in its place an uncharacteristically serious expression. 'I get it, I do. But...I'm not trying to be a dick. I really do have a hard time focusing when she's in the room. And before you suggest it, I don't want to be reassigned. She's...she's something else, boss.' Sighing, I run a hand over my face. 'Listen. There's this stuff you can buy...it's called alpha-gel. You put it under your nose before having a meeting and it'll dampen the effects of her scent.' I give him a wry smile. 'It won't do anything about her personality though, so you're on your own with that one.' He nods once, already taking out his phone to look up the product. 'I'm on it. But...I'm serious about her. Once this case is done, and all our professional ties are cut, I'm going for it.' 'What you do outside of work hours has nothing to do with me if your company is no longer a client of ours and they are consenting.' I turn my attention back to the case file he brought in with him. 'I'll see you tomorrow, Kane.' He leaves, the door shutting behind him with a soft snick. Flipping through the pages, I find the before and after pictures of the home the omega in question came from. Gina Sterling, Kane's client, was with her pack a little over two years, and they never bonded. Legally, she has no claim to anything of theirs based on that fact. However, over the last year and a half, she has spent countless hours, all of her savings, and all her energy on renovations. That she's done herself. Based on the pictures, the house was an absolute shit hole before she stepped in and made it livable. And then her pack brought home a new omega and expected her to just leave quietly. To be fair, she did leave quietly-after ripping out every renovation she put her blood, sweat, and tears into. She took a crowbar and tore out the bookshelf wall she installed, put a hammer to the tile she laid piece by piece in the shower, and destroyed the nest she designed herself-the one they were intending to give to their new omega. Now the pack is suing her for property damage, but our argument is every item that faced damage was bought and paid for by the omega herself. We have receipts, text proof of the pack members promising to pay her back for materials, but they never did. Therefore, the only property she damaged was her own. The photos are proof of that. Even with the destruction she left in her wake, the house is still in better shape than when she moved in. I just got word that the judge handling the case is Judge Beatrice Caldwell, a female beta known for her solid judgement and fairness, no matter who is on the stand. This case should be an easy win. Before I started this organization, the Omega Defense Group, she would have had to use a public defender. She used all her savings on the renovations, and I've been hearing things about firms upping the charge for omega clients due to 'hazard pay'. Whatever the fuck that means. The sound of my phone ringing breaks my focus. I can't stop my grin at the name that pops up on my screen. 'Damien,' I answer, leaning back in my chair. Out of all the members of our newly-formed pack, Damien is the least serious. 'Hey BB.' I can hear the smile in the beta's voice. BB. Brody Benson. Sounds like 'baby'. He thinks he's clever. 'What do I owe the pleasure of your call at-' I check my watch, 'three in the afternoon?' 'Oh you know, I just can't seem to stay away from you.' I snort. Damien would flirt with a tree if the leaves shook in his direction. 'The bell rings, I'm free to walk to my car, and all I can think about is calling my BB.' 'But really?' I ask, tapping my fingers on his desk. 'It's about an omega.' All playfulness is gone from his voice, only excitement remains. 'An omega?' I sit up straighter, my heart rate picking up. Did we finally get a call from the OMS? We registered as a pack four months ago, but haven't gotten a single call for a date so far. I know it's pretty normal-back when I was with Pack Sheffield, we only got five or so calls for a date before we found Trina. Then my packmates fucked it up, and we rejoined the OMS system before getting one more call-Cady Jackman, now Cady De Lucca. 'Not a...specific omega,' he admits, and my heart falls. 'But I just read something interesting. If we volunteer at a heat clinic as a pack, apparently if we like the omega, we can ask the clinic to pass along our information. I'm just...I'm wondering if that would be better than all the sitting around and waiting we're doing now? We'd get firsthand experience with the omega...and fuck, Brody, if I have to go one more month without getting laid-' It's been hard on all of us since we packed up. Pun absolutely intended. After we spent Christmas together a few months ago, we agreed that that we all felt the pull, the instinctual sense of pack, and agreed to not sleep with anyone until we found our omega. I may feel a sense of love for my pack brothers, but I don't want to fuck any of them. 'You think Hunter is going to go for that?' I ask skeptically. Hunter, I've come to realize over the last four months, is all about control. Volunteering at a heat clinic? That's about as out of control as you can get. 'Besides, how are we supposed to know if we actually like her, or if there's just too many pheromones floating around?' 'Well, that's why I'm calling you and not him,' Damien huffs. 'If I have you and Kier-Bear on my side first, he'll see we're serious.' 'I don't know if Kieran will go for it either. He's been so...' 'Broody? Mopey? Pitiful?' 'I was going to say intense,' I roll my eyes, 'but I suppose those work too.' 'So?' Damien hedges. 'You'll talk to Hunter with me?' Letting my head fall back, I close my eyes as I sigh. Even though Kieran and Hunter butt heads most of the time, Hunter ends up being the one we defer to. They both have dominance in spades, but Hunter is definitely the more level-headed of the two. He's not domineering, but he is stubborn. Once he has his mind set on doing things a certain way, it takes a fair bit to convince him to change his mind, especially if he's certain what he's doing is for the good of the pack. But maybe if we all approach him as a united front, he'll see it our way. 'Yeah. Talk to Kieran and get him on board, and then we can all talk to Hunter together.' 'Fuck yes!' He nearly shouts, and I can just imagine how he's probably pumping his fist in the air. Then his voice quiets like he's covering the phone with his hand. 'You little gremlins didn't hear that! Why are you still here?...Yeah, okay, I'll see you guys tomorrow. Enjoy E-sports with Mr. H.' He's quiet for a second. 'Yeah, yeah, I know he's cooler than me.' Then he comes back full volume on the phone, chuckling. 'Sorry. I was talking quietly before but my...volume caught the attention of some of my students. Anyway, I'll talk to Kieran tonight.' I can't help but smile at the way he interacts with his students. He wants us to think he's this suave, blasé, cool guy, but I can tell just how much he loves his job. Hopefully, after he talks to Kieran, we'll see if we can finally get one step closer to finding an omega Title: A Mother's Rewind Tomorrow In "A Mother's Rewind Tomorrow" by CrushReel, Flora Hayes's life takes a tragic turn after a fatal car accident.
