Mr. Ade and his wife were still not on good terms even after two weeks of their exchange of words. He was still angry at his wife for her utterances while the wife ignored him. She was also angry at him for raising his voice on her. "Ibukun", he called her but she refused to answer. "Ibukun", he called again. "What is it?", She questioned with anger. "You ignored me from Abeokuta. You couldn't even ask me about the business proposal I have been preparing since we got here. It's unfair." "Unfair you say? You raised your voice on me." Mr. Ade chuckled. "You insulted me, woman." Mrs. Ade looked away with guilt. Then she said, "I was mad at you because you didn't succumb to my wish." "It was for our good. Our daughter's future was at stake. I just wanted everything to lie low like it never happened. The more we talk about the issue, the more traumatized Salamat will be. Don't you get it? When did you become this defiant? You couldn't even comprehend and perceive the reasons behind my actions." "I wanted to make things right...." "In whatever you do, your family's interest should come first. I would have sued him and every member of his family would rot in jail if I was to consider how I felt about the whole issue." "Mrs. Ade looked down with regrets. "I thought you were doing it because you like the boy and because of his mother." "What?!", Her husband exclaimed. Then he burst into laughter. "Indeed, I am blessed", then he laughed again. Ade, it's not funny." "Of course it is. What happened between Yetunde and I ended long ago, even before the boy was born. Don't be silly. I never knew you were over-reacting because of jealousy." "Can't I be protective of my throne?" "What throne?" He asked amused. "My property of course. My husband is my throne and property." "Whatever......." He was interrupted by the ringing of his phone. It was his friend, doctor Imran. They exchanged pleasantries. "How are you coping over there? "We give thanks to the Almighty. I have been meaning to call you." "Hope all is well?" The doctor asked. "Yes, it is. We are running out of cash. Has anyone shown interest in buying the house?" "That is the reason for my call. Two people have shown interest but they are bargaining." "Imran, I think I have to sell it that way. We aren't settled yet. We are still in the village and we need money to get a place in the city. I have made proposals for the business I want to do over here but the finances are delaying me from executing it." "Alright. I will invite them over and whichever is higher will be given the papers." "Thank you, my friend." "You are welcome. How is my daughter?" The doctor inquired. "She is fine", Mr. Ade responded. "Are you guys available to keep her company?" "Yes, we are. We aren't doing anything. All we do is stay home all day. She even went sightseeing earlier today." "What about her school? You told me she applied to the University over here. Is she going to come back here or you would change the institution to somewhere near you?" "Yes, I have been thinking of doing that? Is it still on?" "What?" The change of institution?" "Yes, I think so. Faridat also changed hers last week but it seems it will soon close." "Why did she do that?" "Her mark wasn't up to the cut-off mark." "Ok. Salamat and I would go to town next week for the change of institution. I will search for the prestigious universities close by, on google. My regards to Farida and her mother." "They will hear. In case you need anything, don't hesitate to let me know." "I will. Thanks, a lot brother. May Allah rewards you for all you have done", Mr. Ade prayed. "May He reward you too. You are more than a friend to me. My regards to your wife." Mr. Ade chuckled. "She is here with her jealousy." Doctor Imran laughed out loud at the statement. He knew Ibukun and her ways. He knew her right from their university days. They were friends before she got hooked up with Ademola. "Tell her that I know my friend loves her a lot." "Don't mind her. Take care." Mrs. Ade was about to grab the phone from him when he quickly disconnected the call and ran to the inner room. Mrs. Ade ran after him as they both laughed like teenagers. ***** A week after Saleem got back to school, the department went on a field school in a community in Katsina State. The field school was to last for 2 weeks which he wasn't prepared for financially. They left the school around 11 a.m to Radda in Katsina state on a Monday morning and got there around 2 pm. Zaria to Radda took 3 hours via. Kafur-Sabon layi Baja road which was 191.8km. When they got there, they set their camp, cleaned the surrounding, and rested for the next day's task. Saleem was exhausted when they got to Radda and was surprised to see how big the community was. Also, he noticed the community had a lot of resources such as good roads, stable electricity, and even water. When they got to the community, they quickly paid a courtesy visit to the king who was called Barebare Umaru of Radda. By the time they got back from the king's palace, Saleem was already starving. He quickly set out to look for where to get something to eat. He saw a stall with a burglary where they sell provisions and varieties of snacks. He debated within himself on which snacks to get as he approached the store and then settled for doughnut which was his favorite. He also asked for a drink and sat down on a bench that was within the burglary and ate to his fill. After eating, he paid the shopkeeper and asked for the prices of bread that was being displayed on a table. Then, he asked the woman to put a loaf of bread inside nylon for him to go with. 'That will be my evening meal', he thought to himself. He was waiting for his chance when a young girl came in. She wasn't looking like an indigene of the community and he confirmed it to be true when she struggled to communicate with the shopkeeper in Hausa. He couldn't suppress the laughter that was bubbling within him and then before he knew it, he let it out. The girl looked at him with embarrassment and he felt sorry for laughing at her. He assisted her to interpret what she wanted from the woman and was surprised to see her leaving immediately after collecting her stuff without thanking him. He felt he has done her a favor and ought to be thanked for it. He was shocked when she told him that she didn't ask for his help but smiled when she eventually thanked him. After thanking him, she ran off. 'What a strange girl, he thought to himself. He shrugged the thought off and collected his change and bread before walking back to the camp. As a 200 level student, it was his first time going to a field school. He has heard numerous accounts of hunger strikes during field school amongst the 300 and 400 level students who already have the experience. Saleem kept on wondering how he was going to survive for the next 2 weeks with the little money on him. He was selective with food and was sure camp food was going to be a disaster. His parents already promised to send him money but they haven't. 'I think it's high time I got myself a job', he thought. When he got back to the camp, he laid on his bed to rest for a while before their coordinators call them out for orientation and instructions. Before he knew it, he slept off, out of exhaustion.
