Chapter 26 Chapter 26 She fell into a deep but fitful sleep that night. She kept reliving the night of the fire. Bringing the memories back up for Dax earlier had also brought baggage and she couldn't shake it. In an attempt to raise both her and Dax's spirit's she decided to show him the blanket and pillow she'd made. He would either hate them and she would know exactly how he felt about her or he'd not hate them and there was still hope that he did want her as his wife. Whatever was bothering him, they'd work it out together. She'd prove to him that she was trustworthy. She'd put the silky fabric over her left arm and the throw pillow in her right, when she walked through the door to Dax's room. She'd thought she'd find him sleeping but to her pleasant surprise, he was sitting up and had a pillow behind him. "Oh! Did David come in!" Her brow creased and concern overwhelmed her. "No. I wanted to sit up and you were taking forever to wake up." She moved over to the chair and stood in front of it, his clear blue eyes following her. "If you weren't so much work, I wouldn't feel the need to stay in bed." Regret instantly filled her as she watched his playful smile fall and embarrassment take its place. "I'm only playing M- uh, Dax. You're not really all that much work. I just overworked myself going to the market and back." The lines on his face faded some but she noticed that his smile didn't come back. "That's because you don't eat enough. From now on, you're to make two settings for dinner and you will be sharing dinner with me. Now." He paused and nodded at the material in her arms. "What's all this? I really don't do frilly stuff like that." Instantly, her heart fell into her gut and her shoulders dropped. "Well." She laughed to herself for being so dumb but she continued anyway. "I don't have all that much to do when you're resting and Savonnuh, Goddess be with her, had way too many dresses. I took a few of the ones I knew I'd never wear and I made you a blanket and pillow from them. I know it's not much but like I said, I had the time and I thought maybe you'd appreciate a gift after everything but... you're right." She shifted backwards and set both items on the chair before turning back to Dax. "It is kind of frilly and unneeded. I'll bring them back to my room when I get back with breakfast." And then she turned and left him. She couldn't tell exactly what his face meant but she knew it was the first time she'd seen it. She'd describe it as horror, only she couldn't think of any reason why he'd react with horror. Yet, that was the closest she could get. Am I really so vile? Her heart hurt. She WAS so vile. And dumb. Of course he didn't mean he wanted her as a wife. He simply couldn't argue with her. She'd made him her favorite dish. Simple but full of flavor and sweetness. Bread, smothered in egg and covered in a sweetened sticky sauce. She was carrying it on one of the pretty silver trays. She'd waited for the new doormen to open the doors before she moved in. Only what she saw had the tray falling to the floor. She slammed both doors shut behind her before running over to Dax as he lay on the floor in between his bed and the chair.
