---- Chapter 5 Jeff took a step back. "I'll come see you tomorrow. Take the time to cool off." They walked away, leaving me without any help. The little life slowly drained from me. By the time the doctor on duty found me, it was too late. The embryo slipped away, and so did my love for Jeff. Gina's betrayal still stung, but it no longer mattered to me. I didn't want to give anything more to them. The next morning, I dragged myself home. As expected, no one was there. Isilently changed out of the blood-soaked dress, removed the necklace from my neck, and placed it on the table in the living room. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I blinked them back, looking up at the sky. Girls from the mountains shed blood, not tears. ---- Years ago, Jeff's family asked if I'd leave with him. I chose him, leaving my village. They supported me through school and college. After graduation, I naturally became a designer and married Jeff. In those three years, I suffered a lot before I got pregnant and gave birth to Gina. I thought I had everything until Veronica appeared. Gina stopped cozying up to me and got closer to Veronica. Jeff stopped pampering me and missed our anniversaries for her calls. They were probably with her now. I let out a bitter laugh and started packing my things. My parents were still expecting my return to our hometown. Just before I boarded the train, Jeff called. "Where are you?" His voice was tinged with exhaustion. "Veronica has agreed not to pursue any responsibility. And I'm not ---- going to dwell on your fake illness." I thought his words would upset me, but I felt nothing. As the train slowly moved, the scenery quickly flashed by my window. "Jeff, I don't want you anymore," I said. He paused, then forced his words out of his gritted teeth. "You're not a kid anymore. Don't make things harder than they need to be." He stared at the empty bed, his veins popping on his forehead. When he came in earlier and didn't see me, his heart skipped a beat. He lit a cigarette, holding it between his fingers. He liked smoking when he was stressed, but ever since I got pregnant and couldn't stand the smell, he had only been lighting the cigarette and not smoking it. "Are you coming home?" he asked. "I'm going to fetch you." ---- Isneered, "Didn't you say I was faking illness? Why bother?" He should know that if I weren't sick, I could go home on my own. "Since you all like Veronica so much, be happy with her," I added. "I'll send you the divorce papers." With that, I hung up and blocked all their numbers. The aftermath of yesterday's miscarriage was still strong. The temperature in the train was high, and 1 dozed off uncontrollably. Jeff stared at the disconnected call in disbelief. He threw the cigarette butt on the ground and crushed it. Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair and dialed his assistant's number. "Find out where my wife is." He couldn't help but think back to my fragile state yesterday, his lips pressed together. "And look into what Veronica had me work on yesterday." Discover our latest featured short drama reel.
