---- Chapter 6 Persistent Woman I was packing up when my phone rang again. An unknown number. I stared at it for a while and ultimately decided not to take the call. My phone kept ringing. And ringing. And ringing. And ringing. I would snap at this rate. I knew who the caller was, and after the fifth ring, it stopped. Amoment of silence later, someone rang the doorbell. I frowned and checked the visitor through the peephole- Winona. Who else could it be? She was tired, and her finger was numb from ringing the doorbell. I could see the worry in her eyes. I opened the door, and she looked at me. Emotions were spilling out of her eyes. ''Why did you move out, Nathaniel? Why did you hide from me?" Her voice was shaking-perhaps from rage, or perhaps from something else. Either way, I looked at her icily. "Hiding from you? I told you, we're done. I ---- made it very clear, in case you missed it." She did not expect my less-than-warm attitude. Fora moment, she froze up, and then her eyes went red." You'd always try to cheer me up after a fight. Why'd you move out this time? You changed. All I wanted was for you not to look at Claude through the glasses of prejudice, and you'd cancel the engagement for that? "Does our relationship mean nothing?" I said nothing and went back into the house. Winona followed me and muttered, "I know I crossed the line this time, but you're my boyfriend. You should be more forgiving when it comes to me." Isank into the couch silently and treated Winona like she was air. She shouted, "Say something!" I smiled. "What do you want me to say? That Claude's accusations were corroborated? That I'm a criminal? Or do you want me to pray for your eternal happiness? " ---- Winona said nothing at first. A moment later, she started, "Claude did... But that's only because you kept pushing him down, and he was miffed about it. He didn't mean to accuse you." I sneered. "He made two reports and six letters. He talked six departments and the board of directors into it. That takes time and effort, and you're telling me he didn't mean to do any of that? "Tf that's what he could do when he's unserious, then we might be witnessing a genius at work. He could be a billionaire if he's serious about it." The expression on her face stiffened, and she almost shed tears. "I know what he did was wrong, but I didn't mean to lie to you. I'd never have said yes to the engagement if I had never loved you." I laughed. I laughed at myself. "Love? All I ever got from you were doubts and accusations! All I ever felt was you taking everyone's side but mine!" Winona shrank a little, but she refused to budge. "I was panicking, but I didn't mean to." ---- "Enough!" I interrupted her. For once, there was anger in my voice. "Do you know what your biggest sin is, Winona?" She stared at me, entranced, waiting for an answer. I stood up, my eyes never leaving her. "You were never on my team from the beginning. If you ever loved me, even for a moment, you'd never have taken the outsiders' side!" Finally, Winona cried. She muttered, "No, I..." I told her to shut up. She had nothing of value to say, and I refused to listen to worthless words. "Leave. I'll get the movers to pack your stuff. You're going to pay rent yourself after this." Her final sliver of hope was broken. Shattered. Her arms hung limply beside her, shivering. A long while later, with her head still hanging low, she murmured, "What about Cla-" Iroared, "Get out of my house!"
