---- Book 1 Chapter 5 looked down at it; 1t was paperwork with numbers, addresses, and information on working for them. I quickly scanned over the documents. My eyes went wide when I saw the time they expected me to start and finish. 7AM till 7PM. And they expected me to be on call in between those hours and be available on weekends. Like, do I get a day off? I shook my head; I couldn't do these sorts of hours. Who was going to watch Maya when my mother was on shift? Something wrong? Eli asked. I pressed my lips into a line and gritted my teeth. How could my life get any more hectic? As if my workload wasn't already enough, and now they were adding ridiculous hours on top. The building shut at 5PM. Why did I have to remain two hours after everyone went home and why two before work started? Was this punishment for flipping them off? They had to know; they had to. Why else make me do these hours? Something is definitely wrong, Cyrus hummed. My eyes darted to them, watching me. IT cant do these hours. I have other commitments, I told them honestly, knowing full well I was about to be fired. 4/6 ---- Book 1 Chapter 5 Like what? Eli demanded to know. Geez, I dont know, a life? But I didnt say that out loud. There was no way I was about to tell him about my life or my familys situation. I didnt need their judgmental stares or comments. I will work it out, I sighed, trying to think of a way that was actually possible. I need to take my lunch break at 2:30PM, though. And why is that? Because I need to get Maya from school. They both seemed shocked for a second, looking at each other. Maya? Cyrus asked, his voice cold while glaring at me like I did something wrong, making me furrow my eyebrows. My sister's kid, I told him, and he actually looked relieved, letting out a breath, and I see Eli nudge him. Fine, but keep your phone on you, Cyrus said, walking off. You can go now, Eli said, looking at his watch. 5/6 ---- Book 1 Chapter 5 Be here on time in the morning. He handed me a set of keys and a security code written on a piece of paper. Memorize that code. It stops the alarms from going off when you come in the side entrance. And for god s sake, dont give it to anyone, Eli said before he turned and stalked off. I pressed the button to the elevator, slipping my shoes on while I waited for it to arrive, glaring at his back as he walked off. Great, now | had to rearrange my and my mothers daily routine to adjust it to them. I was not looking forward to telling my mother this news. 6/6 ---- Book 1 Chapter 6 Book 1 Chapter 6 Chapter 6 Getting home, I pulled up in the driveway. Maya was waiting on the front porch, smiling excitedly when she saw me pull up. Her dark hair was hanging loosely in ringlets down her back, her deep dimples making her look more angelic with her big brown doe eyes. She took my breath away; she always did when I saw her little eyes light up when she saw me. Stepping out of the car, she skipped happily over to me, bouncing on the balls of her feet excitedly. Aunty, aunty, I made cookies with grandma. They have smiley faces, she announced, pulling on my hand. I followed her inside. The smell of freshly baked cookies filled my nose as I stepped inside our home. I grew up in this house, the walls filled with photos of my childhood and now Mayas. My sister and I used to be close, being that we were twins. She was my other half, yet we were complete opposites now and had grown apart, which saddened me. God, I missed her.
