Chapter 21 Unknown to Selene Rivers, Adrian Blackthorn along with Cassandra Rivers took swift mounts to the city where she was living. The very next day outside her dwelling Adrian lurked in the shadows, sitting inside a black shadow-wagon. He had a perfect view of her cottage as he waited for her to come out, his heart beating wildly to see her again. Unlike his expectations to find her, he was shocked to see Damien Blackthorn coming out of her house, his warm fur cloak loosely draped over Selene's shoulders as she exited in a loose maternity gown. From far away he could see Damien fussing over her clothes as he wrapped a scarf around her neck. They exchanged a few words; Selene threw her head back and laughed before heading down the lane together. The sight was particularly disturbing to Adrian as years had passed since she had laughed like that in front of him. "Are you seriously not telling me anything?" Selene asked, her face all smiles as she tilted her head to look at Damien while they strolled down the quiet, serene path. "It won't be a surprise if I tell you now, Selene," Damien replied with a mischievous grin. "Just trust me, you are either going to like it." Adrian gritted his teeth. He couldn't hear what they were saying, but the way Selene's arm comfortably clutched around Damien's forearm set his nerves on edge. "Hmm let me guess, you said similar things last time when you tricked me to a luxurious bathhouse while you got me a ton of maternity robes." "You've been acting very secretive this time, just tell me already if we are going to buy more clothes because I am afraid that I would have to buy a new cottage to keep it?" Damien chuckled. "Then how about we take a turn to a land steward?" "No!" Selene replied in panic, making Damien laugh loudly. Adrian followed at a safe distance, careful not to lose sight of them as he looked red-eyed when Damien's one palm covered Selene's eyes while his other hand carefully guided her to their destination. It was a moon fairground, its vibrant lanterns and cheerful music filling the surroundings. "It's so beautiful! but where are the others.. wait..." Selene's laughter ceased as she looked at Damien with teary eyes. "Don't tell me you..." "Yes I booked the entire venue for you, apart from some staff there is no one here. Didn't you say that it was your wish?" Selene could not speak and just cried softly. She had been raised in an orphanage where even food was scarce; thus even thinking about these things was a luxury. At the age of seven when she was adopted by her grandmother, the woman raised her after working hard and did not have the resources to take her to a picnic or outing. Damien led Selene towards the stalls one by one, securing goals to win a big teddy for her and making her wear a paper crown. She almost forgot everything and after so long was happy beyond belief as they naturally walked hand in hand. "Now, sit here," Damien said, gesturing to a nearby bench. "I'll be right back." "You're not even going to tell me what you're getting?" Selene pouted like a spoiled child, making Damien's eyes soften as he smiled before going away. A few minutes later, he returned with a small paper bag and a steaming cup. "Your favorite chocolate chip biscuits that grandma baked for you during Winterfest and warm almond milk to go with it," he said, but he was not done yet as he took out a pumpkin cake from behind, smiling. Adrian watched with his jaw clenched hard as Selene's laughter turned into a soft gasp. Her eyes, lit up with excitement and joy, were knowingly caught up by the children in her belly. "Damien! I felt a kick!" Selene exclaimed, bubbling with happiness as her voice trembled, thick with emotion. Damien's expression shifted to that of pure wonder as his eyes widened. "Really?" Without thinking, Selene grabbed his hand and pressed it against her belly; their entwining palms feeling the movement. "Here, feel it." Damien froze for a moment, looking at her incredulously; overwhelmed, he dropped to his knees. With both arms around her waist he gently laid his ear over her belly. "Hello little one, your mother remains worried about you. Come out soon or she will keep troubling me." Selene laughed, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "So what if I trouble you, you can't get rid of me can you now?" Damien looked at her with loving eyes. "Never." Adrian clenched his fists, his blood boiling as he looked at them-regret, obsession and rage swirling together. One of the old stall owners came out and gifted Selene a huge heart-shaped balloon. "You two make such a beautiful pair. If my mate was alive she would have loved to see our youth in both of you after fifty years of bonding," he said warmly. She panicked, cheeks turned crimson. "Oh, we're not... it not like that we are friends-" "Thank you, it would be my pleasure to grow old with her." Damien said smoothly, making Selene bite her lip in hesitation as butterflies jittered in her heart. Damien's eyes twinkled with amusement as he handed her the beautiful balloon. She shook her head with a soft smile. "Why did you say that, Damien?" "Just like I told you, Selene," he said with a shrug. "You are the woman I will go against the world for."
